This post falls into the RIFTS section of discussion!

Toon Tuesday: Chester Emmett, (M.D., PhD.) the Body Fixer

Hey! It’s been a couple years, huh? So much has happened since the last time I posted, lots of big life changes (2 kids now, getting divorced, moving state soon…gonna be busy) I probably won’t be posting on a schedule, but I still adore writing up characters. And, hey, I’ve got a new domain name for the blog! Time to print up some business cards, heh.

Though, this isn’t technically a character I wrote… but I did help! My new partner (who usually plays the grim and gritty World of Darkness and is probably going to introduce me to it soon) has never played Rifts before, and so when I went to visit him, I brought the books with me and showed him the ropes! I think he was trying to write a “boring” character, but he had a lot of fun and we laughed quite a bit. It’s amazing what you can learn about someone when you write up a character together!

Game: Palladium Books’ Rifts RPG
Books Needed: Rifts Ultimate Edition
Recommended Setting: Any starting level, low powered campaign – this character is a skill character NOT a kill character. The running joke with Chester here is that he only has one business card left and was just on his way to Kinko’s to get more when he was sucked into some conflict or another, and then forcibly conscripted into a band of mercenaries because, hey, they needed a doctor.

Capture

A human Body Fixer stands among a host of test tube bound mutant humanoids in a laboratory, preparing for surgery…or dissection.

At the Table: Rifts: Let’s Get This Party Started! (Session 1)

This is my first gaming log to actually be completed and posted! We’ve, unfortunately, never been able to commit to a campaign for very long due to a variety of reasons (i.e., schedule conflict, falling out, loss of interest, etc.) But now we’re actually scheduling time to play on a biweekly (hopefully bumped up to a weekly) rate! This is the first time I’ve had a chance to play in more than a year, and we’re introducing a new player to Rifts!

You may also notice that I’ve changed my gaming handle from “CheekyFnPirate” to “TheDungeonRat”. I created my old moniker back in my teenage years, and since then my play style and personality have changed dramatically (as is wont to happen after becoming a parent). This change is to reflect that; new blog color, new layout and setup, fresher content, really, it’s a whole new blog, just as I am a completely different blogger. All old links within the blog should be working, but please feel free to let me know if I need to make any adjustments.

Game: Palladium Book’s Rifts RPG
Dungeon Master: Scott
Players: Myself, Garrett, and Paul (hoping to add a couple more players next session). More info on Players/Dungeon Masters here.
Session Date: 03/28/2016 (Monday)
Session Duration: 3 hours; 2 hours of character and setting prep, 1 hour of play.
Setting: Possibly Rifts Earth, England -unclear as of yet.
Characters:
Battle Magus Controller: The Seeker (Me)
■ German Shepherd Dog-Boy Vagabond: Dean (Garrett)
■ Human Wilderness Scout: Ander (Paul)

Gaming Log: (Bold parenthesis indicates dice rolls, out of game moments, important character notes, etc.)
We were a bit sidetracked by character creation, so we jumped right in with the tried but true (oft read: lazy and/or desperate), “So, you all meet in the tavern…”

Dean the Dog-Boy’s reason for traveling was just that – traveling – and therefore loved meeting interesting people and visiting new places, like this rather small town in the middle of a forest. The Seeker and her large Earth Thunder Automaton (nicknamed Jo) had stopped in their search for lost automatons (her reason for leaving the Magic Zone) to resupply. Dean was captivated by such a strange, obviously magical golem (to most, it is mistaken for an Earth Elemental), and so pestered the Seeker with questions and observations. She good naturedly allowed Dean to sit with her at the bar.

Tabletop Haiku

So, I’ve always enjoyed poety. In my angst-ridden, teenage past, it was pretty much all I did before I was introduced to role playing. There was even a writing contest when I was in college; I tried to write a lengthy poem about a clumsy adventuring group told from the point of view of their harried Bard healer. I didn’t finish it, unfortunately, but there have been a few (horrible and possibly a little tipsy) instances where I’ve scribbled out a rhyme at the gaming table. And why not? Role playing is incredibly inspiring!

So, just for fun, here are a few absolutely gods-awful haiku, inspired by many different role playing games. For those who don’t remember 7th grade English, haiku are composed of 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third.

EXP Bonus
Natural twenty
My battleaxe roars through flesh
I’ll loot you later

Well, You Said Anything…
Character write ups
So many dice to choose from
Yup, another Bard

Ode to My DM
Flipping through pages
Now where was that new rail gun?
My players hate me

Another Fine Day in the Multiverse
Dog-Boys on my left
Spiderwalkers on my right
Lets roast some casters

Another One Bites the Dust
What, are you kidding?
My dice roll hit my notebook
I worked hard on that

How Do You Spell “Diabolical”?
Assassin again?
That’s five different characters
Try a Paladin

Your Name is Not Seymore Butts
It’s really not hard
Just pick a damn backstory
That’s it, you’re a slave

Poor, Deluded PCs
Who needs a healer?
We’ve all got the first aid skill
What do you mean, “crit”?

Power Attacks Cost 2 Melee Actions
I load my pistol
“Cool, but you’re out of ammo”
I throw my pistol

My Plea to Kevin
Spending all damn night
Doing math and rolling dice
No generators

Happy Haiku-ing,
TheDungeonRat

I do not own any referenced or inspiring materials. The haiku in this post are my own, however.
