Toon Tuesday: Ripley the Human Tundra Ranger (Rifts)

I have, unfortunately, been buried under appointments, family stress, medical setbacks, and unscheduled trips to see specialists. This has all kept piling up since the start of April, and no end really seems to be in sight as we wade through all of these issues and personal problems. So I have to maintain the erratic posting non-schedule that’s come to pass recently, in an effort to keep my head above the water. I miss writing characters regularly, and it is a great de-stressor at times, but I just do not have the time, energy, focus, or inspiration lately for it. But here’s a simple character that I’ve sort of cobbled together here and there in brief moments of creativity and drive. Who knows? This hiatus could clear up quickly enough; we are making efforts to relieve as much personal stress as possible, after all.

The gear was probably the most complicated part of the write up, as Rifts: Canada offers some unique vehicles and specialty gear designed for the terrain. The text also lumps all of the Tundra Rangers’ gear lists together, only differentiating based on assignment, rank, O.C.C., and climate; much like any Coalition soldier in that respect. I’m not sure that I’ve written any characters who are immigrants (or are immediate descendants of immigrants); it really added another level to the character and influenced parts of his backstory that I wouldn’t have considered previously.

Game: Palladium Books’ Rifts RPG
Books Needed: Rifts Ultimate Edition, Rifts World Book 20: Canada.
Recommended Setting: As they were designed for Rifts: Canada, they would be most suited there as a part of a good aligned group. They serve as protectors of the innocent, and as such make great monster hunters, town protecters, wandering rangers, and helpful miltant group members.

Toon Tuesday: Adrianne the Playwright, a Phlebus Vagabond (Rifts)

Apologies for not posting last week, first I was ill with an upper respiratory infection and then (just when I thought we were free and clear) my toddler caught it. And a toddler that can’t breathe or nurse is not a happy bedmate, let me tell you, which made editing impossible. Thankfully, the kiddo is starting to perk up, and so I was able to finish my editing to post this week.

Given this character’s background and family, I felt it appropriate to give her a bit extra starting cash and some extra resources. Obviously, this is open to DM approval, so if you just want the basic package, take away the wagon, cut the credits by half or so, and it should be good. The wagon is actually modeled after the “Gypsy Wagon” in Rifts World Book 18: Mystic Russia, but lacks the magical protection and much of the cultural furnishings – it is a simple wagon based on that design,

Game: Palladium Books’ Rifts RPG
Books Needed: Rifts Ultimate Edition, Rifts World Book 30: D-Bees of North America.
Recommended Setting: Any good-selfish aligned campaign that is not pro-CS would be suitable, and any environment as entertainers are welsome anywhere. Not recommended for M.D.C. campaigns, more suited to starting, S.D.C. groups who could use their skill set. Very well suited to travelling entertainment troupes, circuses, and such. Skill character not a kill character.

Toon Tuesday: Fisher the Obsedai (Rifts)

Ah, Obsedai, the hulking rock monsters who fill the “warrior poet” type trope. Not complaining, I love that archetype! This character was a joy to type up (and not just because I didn’t even have to glance through equipment), and I can see him tending the flowers growing on his shoulders in my minds eye. The change from Robot equivalent to Supernatural strength during a rage was a pain to include, but well worth it in the long run, and an interesting mechanic combat wise, too.

Altogether, Obsedai aren’t terribly complicated to level or outfit and are an absolute beast in combat, but they present some great challenges in the role playing aspect of RPGs due to their nature. Hope you enjoy this peaceful monster as much as I did (heck, I may even play him myself!)

EDIT 03/13/2015: I forgot to add in some of the specific skill bonuses. The totals have been changed to reflect the correction.

Game: Palladium Books’ Rifts RPG
Books Needed: Rifts Ultimate Edition, Rifts World Book 30: D-Bees of North America.
Recommended Setting: Good aligned, M.D.C. campaigns are highly recommended; this character works especially well in groups with Cyber-Knights, Psi-Warriors, Blucies, and Lyn-Srrial, but can function well with any justice-seeking or goodly group. Obsedai are philosophers and warriors, and though they can be very violent in battle, they are most often peaceful – even under pressure. Remember that it is impossible to conceal their inhuman appearance, and also, due to their size and power, they are likely to be attacked first in combat. It is recommended that they start the campaign already familiar with a party member who can help them learn the ways of humankind.
